sorry for my distressed subject, but I have to admit I’ve been editing for awhile, and I still have some trouble with pixels. It seems like different applications/codecs use different pixels and things get screwy when you go from one to the other. For example, FCP to After Effects. In FCP ntsc is 720×486, but in AE it’s something different, and I’m sure it has to do with the pixel shape/size. Also, CCIR vs. square pixels… what does that mean for an editor? I’m sorry I’m am being vague, but all it shows is my lack of understanding of the concept. Does anyone know of a great website that explains this?

ps. I know what a pixel is, so I’m not talking about the differences between 1920×1080 and 720×486.

This article is all you need to know. But, it is complicated and you must really read it carefully.

    Have a wonderful day.

[Dave LaRonde] “And then there’s NTSC DV Widescreen, which is SD but it’s 16×9. I’ve heard it called the Poor Man’s HD, because while it’s 16×9, the resolution isn’t even close to HD. “

Wouldn’t HDV be the true poor man’s hd? Still not all that bad…

[Dave LaRonde] “In a perverse sort of way, be glad for all these variants: they’re one way to separate the men from the boys when editing.”

and let Frame Rates be the other!!!!

    nope.

the 480p broadcast spec would be poor mans HD.

Used to skirt the Digital conversion, it allows smaller terrestrial transmissions to go to HQ digital without large outpouring of cash. This format is most common with small players like PBS, campus or low power stations.
