pixelation – please help me!!
Posted by Mike Armstrong on February 11, 2009 at 1:42 pmI had posted about pixelated shadows yesterday. I go a response, so thank you for the help!
However, I couldn’t use the mask method. And now my client is saying that he sees the pixelated shadowing not only in the colour corrected night shots, but also whenever there is a fade out.
I cannot understand why this is occurring. Can someone please help me!
My sequence settings are as follows:
HD 1440×1080 (16×9)
field dominance Upper
Timebase 29.97
Quicktime Video Settings:
Compressor: Apple Intermediate Codec
quality 100%Thank you!

February 11, 2009 at 3:06 pmI would try recapturing your material in ProRes.
Have a wonderful day.

February 11, 2009 at 3:12 pmThanks.
I’d love to be able to do that. but The original footage is gone. I’m the 2nd editor to attempt to work with this project.
I have been given virtually no information about how it was shot and have no idea how it was imported by the first editor. I was given the files from a hard drive and told that the original footage was not accessible.
Any other ideas? i can post some screen grabs if that would help.

About all I can think of would be to try some layering of your video and see if that helps. Try copying all of it over itself and mess with the composit modes. If the blockiness is random this might help, but I doubt you will stop it completely.
Have a wonderful day.

February 11, 2009 at 3:46 pmThanks Chris.
I’m trying your idea, I think it might be helping, but it might also be wishful thinking; but I’m out of ideas.
it’s really weird. it looks like rings of shadows, instead of being solid shadows, there’s a main one, then rings of shadows out to where it stops. also very pixelated.Sorry if I’m beating a dead horse, but I’ve got no ideas left.
Thanks again for all the help!

February 11, 2009 at 3:53 pmScreen grabs always help.
Also, duplicate the sequence and try rendering in ProRes (not HQ) to see if that helps. Also, are you looking at this on an external monitor or just the FCP canvas?

February 12, 2009 at 2:18 amHey Mike…It sounds like you were given the intermediate files to use rather than the real deal HD files which are no longer available because the first editor botched the job by deleting the original files thinking that the intermediate files were all he needed to edit and reoutput. The artifacts you are seeing are because the intermediate file is heavily compressed and will never re-output to full HD if the original source files are not available. There’s nothing worse than trying to fix someone elses botched edit so let your client know that without the original files, not much can be done to save the project. It’s sad, but sometimes that’s the way it goes. STU
I know alot….but not as much as the other guy.
