pixel problem in FCP with sony EX1
Hi!
My clips in Final Cut Pro 6 shows lines/wheals/verges* when I watch it from the timeline and in exported movis as well.(* I am Swedish, i dont really know the best word in English)
When I import clips from sony EX1 (or EX3) to my project and drag it to time line FCP asks me if I want to change sequence settings to match the clip settings, I choose yes and the sequence get the same settings as the clip. No problem so far.
But when I watch it from the timeline there is some kind of pixel problem. It is like horizontal lines or wheals in the movie, it gets more obvoius when there are a lot om movement in the picture.
When I change field dominance in sequence setting to “none” instead of “upper(odd)” as the clip settings are, the lines disappear but then the quality of the clip seems to get lower and grainy, the exported file does not look very good.Is there anyone who knows what can cause this?
If you want I can upload at small clip where you can see what I mean.
I use the following:
iMac 24 Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GT 130
OS X 10.5.8 Leopard,
Final Cut Pro 6.0.6
QuickTime Player 7.6.4
XDCAM Transfer 2.11.0clip format:
Vid rate: 25 fps
Field dominance: Upper(Odd)
Pixel Aspect: Square
Frame size: 1920 x 1080
Compressor XDCAM EX 1080i50 (35Mb/s VBR)Please help me, thanks in advance!

I just realiced, the clips are like this before i use them in final cut pro, maybe, there is something happens when importing the clips with XDCAM Transfer?

Hi lars,
The only wrong thing is that you are watching interlaced footage in a progressive monitor.
Depending of the monitor, the interlacing artifacts will be more or less noticeable
The only way to avoid this is by recording progressive or de-interlacing your footage.
Depending of your delivery format, you need to decide to work progressive or interlaced.

when I watch clips filmed with a Canon EOS 5D I dont get the interlacing artifact problems.
Is it because it is compressed with H.264 whom is not a interlaced format?
(The EX1 clip was compressed with XDCAM EX 1080i50)regards

When you deinterlace, somehow you have to recreate half of the picture.
The plugin that you use is critic for the final result.

Think that everything to be watched in a computer must be Progressive.
Things to be played in TVs can be interlaced.

H264 is just a codec and supports interlaced and progressive.
Still cameras shoot only Progressive. -
So if I connect a reference monitor to my mac, the interlaced clip will look good if the monitor supports interlaced format?

If you work with interlaced stuff you must have an interlaced monitor (TV).
That’s your only valid reference.
With a progressive monitor you are lost.

Hi,
I am having the same problem,
I need to deliver in 1080i as progressive it too jerky ( one long tracking shot )
I have a broadcast monitor, which when I play back from camera it is great.
But when connected to the iMac via DVI cable it looks terrible (i have set the Display to be 1080i)
I have gone as far to check the footage in a PC Premier Suite, where it seems fine?
I am almost certain it has to do with the XDCAM Transfer?
Any Help in the regard, would be much appreciated…
