    Hello,
I’m rendering a movie at 720×576 and pixel aspect ratio of 1.422:1 from a 3d app to AE. I want it to be widescreen so as far as I can see it’s squashed and rendered into 720 X 576 and then pulled wide again in after effects. The problem I’m having is the footage is becoming slightly pixellated when I do this. The footage is perfect when squashed and I’ve no compressor on it, I also have the field scan set to off. Anybody any ideas as to why I’m loosing quality?

If it’s in your comp window you’re talking about – then that it is just AE simulating what it will look like when viewed in widescreen. If you view your AE output through a Decklink Card/AJA/ Bluefish444 or similar you will see an undistorted version in 16:9.

I found it annoying at first (Pretty much all apps show it this way though) but if you can monitor it externally it’s fine.

Just to confirm – AE isn’t actually distorting your pixels, it’s just a preview.

Just like Jimmybee said – the preview aspect ratio correction in AE only uses a very simplistic interpolation which can lead to stepping. when rendered, everything willl be fine, so do not worry about it too much. If you are using OpenGL, switching to Adaptive resolution will slightly improve things, but it will never completely disappear. If you need sub-pixel precision and the artifacts are getting on your nerves, pre-compose.
