Pixel Aspect Ratio
Posted by Rusty Brown on March 26, 2006 at 11:44 pmI need to convert my 16:9 animation (settings: 16:9 / 1024×576 / D1/DV PAL(1.07)) into a 4:3 version (720×576).
What pixel aspect ratio should I use?
And what’s the best way of doing it in A.E?I have tried keeping it as D1/DV PAL(1.07) and reducing the comps size to 70% to fit it to 4:3 but it seems to squish it verticaly.
Any ideas?
thanks

March 27, 2006 at 12:06 amIf you want it to be 16:9 (720×576) then drag it onto the new comp icon in the Project Panel and set that comp to D1/DV PAL Widescreen using the Preset popup in the Composition Settings dialog box. This will change it to the correct pixel aspect ratio. It will look squashed but that’s supposed to happen. You don’t need to scale it to 70%, AE does all of the calculations automatically.
If you want it to be 4:3 (720 x 576) then do the same as above but choose the D1/DV PAL setting (not widescreen). This will give you a centre-cut version with the edges of your 1024×576 comp sitting outside the viewable area.
Then just render and your good to go.
By the way, your 1024 x 576 shouldn’t be using 1.07 pixel aspect ratio, it should be 1.0 (square pixels). Once again if you stick to using the presets you won’t need to play around with the PAR settings.
Hope that helps,

March 27, 2006 at 4:27 pmThat’s great – thanks very much for the help.
Couple more questions….
You say it will look squashed… does this then correct itself when played out, say on DVD?
And how will it appear on a non-widescreen TV? Will I need to do another version to view as letter-box?I’m getting it transferred to digibeta and the transfer house have asked for “4:2:2 10bit Quicktime with pixel aspect ratio 720 X 576”. Is 4:2:2 the same as the D1/DV PAL Widescreen in AE?
Would you recommend going through all the comps and resetting them to square pixels?
Again, thanks for the help and I’d appreciate any more advice.

March 27, 2006 at 11:21 pmRather than giving you incorrect information regarding DVD requirements I suggest you place a post on one of the other forums.
4:2:2 is a sampling rate of color and luminance values and has nothing to do with pixel aspect ratio. I did a quick search and found this link which should fill you in: https://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/411samp.htm
As long as it doesn’t mess up what you’ve already done I’d recommend fixing the apspect ratio on your 1024 comps. If you can live with it as it is don’t bother this time.
