pixel aspect ratio – i repeatedly bumped into problems since years.

right now i need to cut a compilation from a few clips which are divx and xvid compressed. i figured out already that it’s not possible to edit those formats in premiere and that they need to be converted first. i found a few workflows but they were all a bit incomplete.

here’s the case. one source for example is 720×304 2.35:1 25fps mpeg4 divx5 and from what i’ve learned it has to be converted to “DV AVI type 2”. I used Digital Media converter, chose DV Video converter as Video compressor and converted the file. No matter what settings I use for the dimensions, I always end up with a 720:480 (3:2) 25fps 24.4Mbps file. obviously the dimensions are now wrong.

I will spare you other details and everything that I’ve tried already. I was guessing at first that the pixel aspect ratio is “wrong” but I’m not so sure about that anymore.

Can someone please help me to figure out how I can bring back those files into premiere to edit it and use it’s original dimensions.
If I am doing something wrong with the compression and if you have a better idea please let me know.

    Thank you a lot

since none of the experts could come up with a solution i had to find it myself ; )

for anyone who stumbles into the same problem:
just import as usual>rightclick the clip in the project window (not in the timeline)>interpret footage>pixel aspect ratio – conform to: HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)>click ok
if needed adjust the scale of the clip once it’s in the timeline.

btw: i guess this is probably not the 100% proper way to do this and that it’s a bit dirty… but since in my particular case right now quality is not 1st priority it’s ok for now.

if someone knows a better solution please let me know : )

sorry, one setting was wrong – it was DVCPRO HD (1.5) instead of HD Anamorphic

Your problem is when you covert your footage. I’ve never used that software (I prefer soreson squeeze). But you need to maintain your Aspect Ratio. You are converting it into 480p which is why your footage is looking streached vertically.
