Hi everyone. I’m relatively new to Sony Vegas and I have a question about pitch shifting. How can I pitch shift certain portions of audio without pitch shifting the entire audio track?

Go to the timeline and select the event you want to pitch-shift. If you want only a part of this event to pitch-shift, keep the event selected, place the cursor at the site you like to begin the pitch-shift and press S to split the event. Go to the frame where you want to end the pitch-shift and split again.
Now select the part you want to pitch-shift, right-click on it and select PROPERTIES.
For METHOD you select CLASSIC. A lot of options appear. Select LOCK TO STRETCH and fill in a number for PITCH CHANGE.
    Press OK
Please note that the length of the audio event changes.

Instead of filling in a number for the pitch-shift, you can also just select CLASSIC and press OK without pressing the LOCK TO STRETCH.
Now you can ungroup the video from the audio (select and press U) and drag the audio event from 1 site to the left or to the right while you keep pressing the Ctrl. This also changes the length of the audio event and at the same time the pitch.

Thank you very much for your help Theo. One more thing though. Is there anyway I can change the pitch without slowing down or speeding up the audio?

If you mean, “Can pitch be changed without changing the audio’s length?”, I believe the answer is yes. I believe you can do this in the pro version, but I do not have any of the studio versions to check.

Pitch can be changed by keyboard commands. When you change it from the keyboard, I can see no change at all in audio length. For example, pressing the “-” (minus) key while holding down the shift key reduces the pitch by one octave for whatever audio is selected. Do not use the “-” key on the numeric keypad for this.

The document which contains all of the keyboard commands can be downloaded from the Sony site.
