  • PIP/split screen – dance recital quagmire

    Hi everyone,

I’m looking to create a quick workflow action/command/whatever to make a PIP/split screen – with the final result dividing the screen approx. 50/50 and a soft/feather like divider between the two. (horizontal division)

This past weekend I shot the ubiquitous dance recital. It was a fairly elaborate (4cam (EX1Rs), SD60i 16:9) shoot. Ideally I’d like to intersperse a split screen of a full group shot (bottom layer) with a panning CU shot riding above (top layer). I use Ultimate S Quad Cam as my editing foundation.

I’m ultimately trying to solve the endless dilemma of … “How to please all the mommies with some face time of their little darling (only slightly cynical here, they were all pretty cute – as a dad to 2 little girls myself, been-there-done-that, appreciate the long term value of such a final product) with capturing the essence of the group dance.”

Any suggestions, comments, tips etc would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    RR

I have done the recital thing before and use two cams…one wide one moving with close-ups.. I do slow pans from side to side for the “face time” when possible and look for closeup time and such for specific moves and such, I then use the wide shot for actual dance and group things. IMHO I would NOT do a split screen, as it (again in my opinion), will be distracting and take away from the presentation. As much as the parents want it to be all about their child, it was a group effort…I have had happy customers in doing this…but again…that is how I would approach it.. (And YES I am a parent too!) Hope it helps!

I agree with Scott about split screen sort of ruining the overall feel of the performance, but I can say that I’ve seen other videographers do a horizontal split screen with a wide shot of the stage on the bottom and the closer panning on the top. Not quite 50/50 but maybe 35 on the bottom and 65 top? Maybe not the most elegant idea but it does shoehorn both images on screen at once if that’s what’s needed.
