Most of my projects are to be viewed on a large screen television HD set at 1920×1080 resolution . I currently have a 5 mega-pixal camera which I don’t think will be a problem. I occasionally have some images from other individuals that are of much higher size. These may need to be resized. What is the best way to resize these pictures prior to bringing into Vegas and what is the proper size to convert these pictures to. Thanks

The recommendation is to only use the resolution you need. If you are not zooming into the pictures at all then 1920×1080 is the right size. Anything bigger than that and you are asking Vegas to resize 30 images for every second of footage and that’s a lot of work. Note: Vegas will not resize once and reuse that for 30 frames… it will resize 30 times! It is much better (and faster to render) to resize once in an image editor.

If you plan to zoom in on some, then keep the resolution just enough so that the zoom doesn’t exceed the original resolution of the image. HD is around 2MP so 5MP images are more than twice the resolution that you need.

Irfanview does a good job at resizing the pictures. I was surprised when the overall size of the file was significantly much smaller. I found that Irfanview set the JPEG quality at 80 out of 100. In their FAQ, they mention that this would be about right for most people. A 4.5 MB file went all the way down to 500 KB. When I set the JPEQ quality at 100, the file size became much larger. I opened each picture (80 vs. 100 setting in quality), viewed, and zoomed in on them. There was a difference but only noticeable at significantly zooming in. I would not be doing so with the pan/crop tool. So, the question is: Is it easier for Vegas to work with the smaller files i.e. 500 KB as opposed to 4.5 MB given the same pixel sizes for both images or does this aspect not affect introducing possible artifact into the final project? Thanks

I figure that I won’t zoom more than 1/4 into a picture. Would then an appropriate picture size for me be 2400 x 1350 if this is the case? Thanks

Regardless of the file size, the image will be expanded in memory to an uncompressed state so both files take up the same memory in Vegas, which is determined by the resolution. I usually set my JPG’s to 90 and I’m happy with the quality. The key is to use a quality setting where you can’t see any artifacts at your maximum zoom level.

    Yes.
