  Picture Motion Browser halved my filesize after exporting AVCHD back to HDR-SR12!

  Can anyone explain the following curious workflow output?

  1. Imported a 78 second AVCHD (1920x1080i) clip from my Sony HDR-SR12 using Handycam Utility, giving me a 165K m2ts file on my PC.

  2. Used Vasst and Newblue’s AVCHD Upshift to convert the AVCHD file into HDV format giving me a 589K M2T file. (I do this to give me a lossless, less compressed high definition file to smooth the editing process.)

  3. Edited this file (trimmed/removed a mere 3 seconds) using Sony Vegas Platinum 9.0b and rendered as type Sony AVC using template AVCHD 1920×1080 NTSC 5.1 Surround to give a 159K m2ts file.

  4. Exported this file to HDR-SR12 using Picture Motion Browser.

  5. Re-imported the resulting file from HDR-SR12 to PC using Handycam Utility which gave me a 72K m2ts file!

  It was noticeable that PMB took a long time to complete Step 4 (35 minutes). As a comparison I exported the output of Step 1 (unmodified) back to the handycam and the process took less than 2 minutes.

  So, what is happening in the Upshift process, or the Vegas editing or the Vegas rendering that triggers the change in PMB’s behaviour? And, even if PMB has decided it needs to do some extra work on the file what algorithm is it using to reduce the filesize by half with no apparent change in media characteristics or in picture quality?

  I should say that the output files from Steps 1, 3 and 5 all display the same headline media file information (AVCHD 1080i format, 1920×1080 Image Size, 16:9 aspect ratio, 5.1 Dolby Digital audio).
