  • Picture in Picture Border issues – overlap & poor colour match

I am trying to do a picture in picture edit, complicated by the fact that the PIPs will move around and overlap etc. To make them look better I’m adding a border to them however when I pick Black as the border colour it is not matching the black background of Avid. Also there is a thin line of the original picture hanging out (as it were) underneath the border so you see a thin line on the left of each PIP.

Has anyone encountered this? I’m using Avid Media Composer’s Blend/PIP tool.

    thanks in advance

(In case you’re wondering Gary – I’m testing different ways of doing this 🙂 )

The blacks probably don’t match because the default black in the Avid background is video safe–blacks at 16.

You could use your color picker to select the blacks in the background so they do match, or eyeball it. Unfortunately I don’t think Avid lets you input actual color values in the Picture in Picture tool (for example, Reds at 16, Greens at 16, Blues at 16).

Regarding the thin line to the left–you could try a small crop left–4 or 5 value, maybe. I think the border goes on after the crop, so maybe this will fix that issue.

    Thanks for replying.

I discovered that even though I was picking black for the border, Avid was setting the Luminosity of the colour higher than zero – hence a slightly grey border.

As for the overlap, I moved the crop by 1 wherever it occurred and the problem magically vanished – must be a Line issue though I would have expected that to happen on horizonal lines (ie at the top and bottom of each cropped PIP) and not vertical.
