    Hi all

I’m trying to repair some car mounted racing track footage that has bits of mud/ flies thrown up on the lens – nothing too bad but small & noticable.

I really want to use photoshop cs3 & use its clone, healing & vanishing point tools on a video layer and then import the footage into After Effects to use further effects on (sky replacement via tracking, time offset clone to fill in other smears, etc) that would be too laborious in photoshop.

Problem is when I do a preview of the photoshop video footage in after effects, the performance drops to processing 1 frame per minute or even the whole application hangs once I hit the stretch of the footage that I’ve repaired in photoshop. Is this to be expected trying to preview heavily repaired photoshop video layers in after effects? Is it just a peculiarity of my setup (lucky me) or have other people had this & overcome it.

I would ideally like to paint out one set of dirt using photoshop & then import the footage into AE & finish off the rest.

The footage is HD & on an external USB/ Firewire drive. I’m using AE & Photoshop CS3 on a pc laptop dual core with windows xp & 1.5gb ram. Any insight would be gratefully received.

As a PSD file. It imports fine & is recognised as the right sized HD footage.

Others have pointed out I should have more ram involved so I’m upping it to at least 3GB asap & turning on disk caching. Multiprocessing & fast previews are off. It still hangs around for up to two minutes when it hits the 1st frame of the photoshop edited section before slowly moving on with the rest of the preview.

Hopefully the ram will change this, otherwise its all going to take a long time.
