With a clean plate and a garbage matte you could do something crude, but probably better to take the comp into Motion or After Effects. Motion comes with FC Studio, AE might be a bit more elegant.

In the world of motion pictures & video, this is called rotoscoping: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotoscoping#Technique

In addition to the programs Kevin suggests, you can also do this with Shake, Silhouette Roto, Studio Artitst, and, if time is more (much more) valuable than money, some of the Imagineer products.

And, don’t forget Combustion by Autodesk, my choice and the “desktop” choice of many efx artists, especially those who know and use Smoke, Fire, Flame, and Inferno.

You would do that in After Effects much easier than trying to do this in FCP. Garbage Mattes would be the way to go in FCP or you can try to create a mask in Photoshop and try to use that to make out the arm.

And don’t forget …. Adobe Photoshop.

If you have Photoshop CS3 Extended edition then you can open your movie directly within the Animation (timeline) palette

Actually that’s right. I did this one for a 6 second shot where I had to remove some extraneous things that should not have been in the frame. Worked quite well. Not sure I would want to do a long shot this way, but for 6 seconds it was good.

    AMEN to that, brother!

I LOVE Combustion – I’ve been using it since v2.1. Unfortunately, it’s Autodesk’s best-kept secret. I wish they wouldn’t continue to treat it like the bastard stepchild…

For paint and roto, Combustion is king. Add in Imagineer’s Mocha and you have an unbeatable combination. Combustion’s UI is perfectly designed, and you can fly with a tablet. AE always felt clunky to me, but Combustion was love at first sight.
