  • Photoshop layers not updating/reloading in After Effects CC

I am working on an AE project which has a layered PSD integrated into it. When I make changes to the original PSD, they are not showing up in AE. I’ve reloaded the project, reloaded all footage, cleared out various caches… None of this has worked.

Can anyone help me out with this one? (rhetorical question)

    Hi Dave.

I tried this & it took me back to the same file I’ve been editing. The changes are showing in photoshop, but It’s still not updating in AE.

    Am I missing something?

Have you changed the layer names?

    Hmmm… It’s possible.

I was working on this file almost a year ago and put it down until now.

The names of the layers in PS & AE are the same though.

Ae will only refresh existing layers when you update in Photoshop. It will not catch new layers and pull them in.

If you are changing existing layers with no job, let’s try manually reconnecting one of the changed layers.

When Ae imports a PSD as a comp, it creates unique footage items in the project panel for each layer, and names them like a backwards file path (like “Layer 1/MyPSD.psd”). Select that item in the project panel and right-click, Replace Footage, With file…, and then navigate to the PSD you’ve been changing, set the import layer option to “Choose layer,” and select the appropriate layer.

    What happens then?

Ok. This worked. Thank you very much.

Is this how it’s supposed to always work?

    Hmmm…

After I replaced the footage. It is now updating on it’s own, whenever I save in PS.

Problem solved. Not sure why though…

This forum is the best. Thanks guys.

No, it is supposed to “just work” as you initially described, where you make a change in Ps and it seamlessly and automatically updates in Ae. You mentioned this was a bit of a legacy project; I wonder if there’s some multi-version bug here.
