Could anyone tell me how to import a psd file with layers maintaining the transparencies?

I would like to make a dvd menu animation and I got the menu design in psd file from someone else. After I imported this file in AE, it doesn’t understand the layer transparencies at all and the design falls apart.
Do I have to change some settings in AE or do I have to define alpha layers in PS? If the job is to be done in PS, how can I convert transparencies to alpha channel?

Any help appreciated, just keep in mind please: I am completely new in AE.

    Thanks.

    This is simple. File>Import

This will give you the option to either import a single layer, merge the layers to a flattened file, or import as comp. You probably want a comp in this case. A comp brings in all layers just as they are in photoshop. If you double click on the comp. It will open in the timeline just as it is in photoshop. If a layer has it’s eyeball off in photoshop, it will be off in the comp also. You can also open the folder and bring in one layer at a time into a previously existing comp.

I did the same before I posted my question. But there were some layers in PS with less than 100% opacity and AE (or I) couldn’t handle them. I mean these layers weren’t transparent at all.
After importing the psd file as a comp, I saw something completely different in AE from the original PS design. I hope I did something wrong, but I don’t know where did I fail…

I did the same before I posted. But still I didn’t see the same comp in the AE window. There were some layers with less than 100% opacity in PS and these weren’t transparent in AE at all. Or did I do something wrong?

I just tried importing a PS file as a composition and it preserved all of the layer opacity settings and blending modes. Are you sure you’re importing the PSD correctly?

As I can’t recreate your problem I don’t think I’d be able to give you any more advice without seeing your problem for myself =/
