I have a lower third greyscale from photoshop that i want to use as a mask over a looping background created in AE… what do i need to tell AE so that it will use the greyscale as a mask?

Look in your help files (or manual) regarding the term track matte. You will want to set your photoshop layer as the alpha matte for your other layer.

Or, possibly you want to set it as a Luma Matte, either way, they’re in the same place in the manual.
