Photoshop Frame Size for HD Film
Hello,
I am developing some graphics for a client who shot his footage in high-definition widescreen for a documentary film he is producing. He tells me that his Final Cut Pro file is set to frame size of 1440 x 1080 (HDV 1080i). In order to create the graphics so they match, what should my Photoshop frame size be??? I see only two presets for HD available: 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080.

Hi Laura,
You must have an older version of PS, as the CS3 version includes a preset for HDV, which is 1440 x 1080 pixels and uses a “pixel aspect ratio” of 1.333. The final viewable display is still 1920 x 1080 since 1440 x 1.333 = 1920, that is how HDV works.
I edit in Premiere, and even for HDV projects at 1440 x 1080, graphics are created at the full 1920 x 1080 with square pixels (1.0 aspect) and the edit software correctly interprets the display based on the pixel aspect.
I’d check with the editor and see what his software requires for stills (I don’t use Final Cut), or just get him a sample of each to try (1440×1080, 1.333 and 1920×1080, 1.0), but I’m guessing that 1920×1080 would be fine.

Thank you so much Jeff for your suggestions and sharing your knowledge. I will give my client a couple of sample stills to try. My bet is that you are right that the 1920 x 1080 will be correctly interpreted in the editing software.
