photoshop files into FCP
Posted by Andy Kachor on November 21, 2007 at 12:08 amHi, when I import photoshop files into FCP it distorts the aspect ratio, making it into widescreen when it’s supposed to be 4:3, I think it has to do with the pixel aspect ratio or something.
any thoughts?
thanks

November 21, 2007 at 1:40 amMake make sure the photoshop file is the right aspect ratio. Normally in photoshop, the aspect is squared by default, while in Final Cut Pro it could be 3:4(or something else like this). If you want, you can also change the final Cut Pro aspect to square, but normally you don’t want to.
in Photoshop goto: The menubar > Image > Pixel Aspect Ratio > and select the one that matches Final Cut Pro.
hope this helps.

November 21, 2007 at 5:07 amThe last several versions of Photoshop have had easy setups for all the standard formats of video. Just choose the one that fits the format of video you are using, and away you go.

November 21, 2007 at 3:32 pmFor a screen size of 720×486 the workflow is:
1. Create a document of 720×540.
2. Do your graphic work.
3. Before output to FCP go to Image>Image Size>uncheck the ‘constrain proportions’ box, change the 540 to 486. This will give you a ‘squashed’ look in PS, but when imported into FCP it will look correct. The pixels in your computer are square and television pixels are rectangular. You have to compensate for that when you create your graphic in PS.
For 720×480 DV footage, the procedure is the same, but the initial document size is 720×534; then change to 720×480.
