In photoshop a technique that I use a lot is to create transparency in a layer and then lock the transparency only. This allows one to paint or manipulate the remaing portions of the image and the transparency remains unaffected

Is there something similar in AfterEffects ?

    Thanks

Thanks. I am did that. Not sure though that it is exactly what I wanted.
I want to lets say use the vector paint tool. If I had the transparency locked then I could just use a massive brush and it would only paint the
parts of the image that were the visible elements. In photoshop you could just ‘fill with bkg colour’ the transparency remains transparent.

I hope that explains it a bit better.

use a mask or track matte.

A mask only allows the RGB to be seen whithin it (At default settngs at least).

A track matte will allow you to use the alpha (Transparency) or luma (from the RGB) from another layer as it’s own alpha.

So for example, if you made the text ‘Trug” on one layer. Then just washed another layer with colors and whatever, you could use the alpha from the Text layer to isolate where the colors show. So you would have an image with your wash of color only whithin the word ‘Trug’.
