Photo Animation – HELP PLEASE!
Hi, I’m making my school’s end of the year video. I wanted to make an amazing intro to it using After Effects CS4. Hopefully you understand what I’m about to explain. I wanted to have pictures fly by the camera (from behind the camera to in front of it), and each picture go into a certain space. Once all of the pictures have flown by the camera it should spell out CMS. I have more than enough photos to accomplish this. I’m not looking for anyone to type out a step by step tutorial, but if anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Create a photoshop document with a picture per layer and put the pics in the shape of the words. Then bring that document into AE as a composition. Resize the comp to be the size you need, tie all the pics to a null (and turn the 3d switch on for all layers) move them back in Z space until they’re the size you want. Then it’s just a matter animating the pictures. Start at the last pic you want to slide in and animate backwards.
Or, if you’re pics are spaced along a grid (which you could set up in Photoshop) you could use the card dance or card wipe effects (probably using some precomp with fractal noise and a ramp of some kind) to effect the layers.

It’s not working… I try to import the .psd file as a composition in After Effects but it goes in as ONE file and not all the layers. Help?

Double-check all of your settings.
File>import>File
Choose your Photoshop file
Make sure that import kind is set to composition
(I usually do footage dimensions at layer size too)
Then hit OK. You should have a composition show up and a folder with all the layers in it. You can either change the composition to be the size you need for your final output, open it and animate in there. Or you can create a new composition (or use some one you’re already working in) and just copy and paste all the layers into it.– The Great Szalam

Thanks, now that you explain it better I can locate what’s going on and explain the problem. My file IS .psd, and I’m using CS4 for both Photoshop and After Effects. So here’s the problem: when I change to Composition on the import and hit “Ok” the file imports as footage WITHOUT the layers and it’s one layer that is unanimatible, I need layers to animate the pictures in Z-space. I tried renaming and duplicating the picture and almost everything, I just need layers and that photo took me an hour, I have until Wednesday to fix it so I don’t know if you’ve run into this problem but if you know what to do I thank you.

So when you choose to import your footage as a composition, it doesn’t import a composition and a folder? What comes into the project window?

The whole file merged into one layer.
