Phasing on stereo mics?
Hi,
I was asked a particular question just the other day abt my zoom h4 portable recorder- “how come there’s no phasing problems on this default stereo mic set-up?”
Which stumps me as it seems like phasing could be an issue for any stereo mics set-up with two mics in such close proximity… (either that or I got my phasing theory wrong?) so what gives, gentlemen?

Hello MIn,
If capsules are coincident to the sound source, phase problems due to capsule positioning are minimized.
The diaphragms of the h4 are not coincident. As such, sound sources from certain axes must create phase cancellation at certain frequencies. The laws of physics apply.

Phasing only becomes an issue when you mono up.

It’s the differences in phase that helps differentiate one channel from the other – thus making it stereo.
