  • Phanther built RAID is slower w/Tiger than Tiger built RAID!

    Hi,

Tiger built RAID is faster with Tiger BUT incompatible with Panther.

    Existing Apple RAID sets
If you are using the Apple RAID function built into Disk Utility you will find that RAID sets built with Mac OS X 10.3 will work with Mac OS X 10.4. However, RAID sets built with Mac OS X 10.4 will not work with a Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier Mac OS system. Tiger RAID sets are seen as hard drives that need to be initialized on earler Mac OS X systems.

In addition, my tests indicate using a RAID built with Panther on a Tiger system, reduced drive performance by as much as 10% when compared to using a RAID set created by the Tiger Disk Utility method instead. If you stay with Panther RAID sets for compatibility reasons while upgrading to Tiger there may be a small performance penalty.

Since the purpose of a RAID in many cases is to increase hard drive performance you may want to be aware of this.

    Best Wishes,

    Mitch
