Always check the different channels as well. YOu might find one that you can dupe, use Levels on to ‘clean up’ and then apply some gaussian blur of about 2 pixels to get you a fast and fairly accurate selection.

I prefer to use the pen tool for selections I want to save; they’re much smaller to save with the file than saving actual selections as alpha channels.

To get professional quality masks, using layers masks will give you the best results. The levels of gray in a layer mask give you a density mask which allows teh needed tranparency on a glass or the edge of a fine hair on a person..
