Performance upgrade by installing 64-bit Vista on $500 laptop?
Bought a $500 Toshiba laptop last summer with 3GB RAM and an Intel duo-core processor that appears to support 64-bit. It came preinstalled with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I have Vegas Pro 8 and edit AVCHD files, and frankly, I’m growing tired of the choppy quality when I preview from the Vegas timeline.
It appears I can purchase Vista Home Basic for $99 and spend a bit more to have Microsoft send me a 64-bit version.
That would enable me to run Vegas 8.1.
Realizing that I’m editing on a cheap laptop, does anyone have any idea as to whether I would see a significant enough performance upgrade to warrant this?
I realize that editing AVCHD on a laptop is far from optimal. And quad-core laptops are out of my price range right now. I’m just looking for more accurate preview ability and faster rendering.

No…I doubt you would see any significant change in performance
to warrant that…and may likely instead, bring up other issues

Hmm. Thanks. So could I infer that a $700 64-bit duo-core laptop wouldn’t be much of an improvement, either? (I really want to keep editing on a laptop. I produce daily news features for a daily newspaper, and I like to bring my machine home at night in case I need to make corrections/new uploads before the next day’s paper comes out.)

Re the upgrade you mention above…..A $700 64 bit
laptop upgrade isn’t too bad….but as with everything there
are pros and cons…Such as plugins for 64 bit architecture are rare at the
moment (newblue fx however is now 64 bit ready)and Vegas
8.1 needs a bit of housekeeping.You can add a lot more memory to your system now. You
are no longer limited to the 4GB memory limit thats
present in the 32 bit architecture.ETC…ETC…
But as for me….Im never gonna use Vista.
And now just have a few 64 bit machine on the side….

Oh, I figured vegas 8.1 was stable (more or less). I might just go for the reinstall on the $500 laptop. It’s not my main machine, and I’m curious. Thanks for the info.
