April 14, 2013 at 1:19 pm[Dylan Hargreaves] “This seems odd. I have mine set-up so the media cache/prefs etc are all on my Mac hard drive, which should surely be faster than any external drive. Still I get the stutters and in bigger projects awful handling unless I render everything.
“Worst possible place to put your media cache, especially if it’s a single drive. Your OS, Apps and media cache all trying to come off the same place will bring your system to a crawl eventually.
If you have a Mac Pro with multiple drives inside with one dedicated just to media, then that can work to a point. Eventually, the single drive is always slower than multiple drives in a RAID so you’ll get the stutters back and poor performance. You can actually set up a RAID inside your Mac Pro with two drives if you have the drive slots open.
All media and cache should be relegated to your media array. Connection should be no slower than FW800, faster is better.
By the way, this is true of all NLEs not just Premiere Pro. You always want your media on a dedicated array or drive.
