Pencil Effect in C4D 10.5

I would render the pencil alone and then I would animate a mask over the 2D lines in a composing program.

You could otherwise use align to spline to animate the pencil. Then use that same spline with in a sweep nurbs that has the growth at the same rate as your pencil.

Another option is to use a Mograph tracer object on the tip of the pencil.

I guess there are a few more options for this too.

I did this very same effect for an architectural firm, and it came out beautifully.

First you need to make sure you have the correct path for your pencil to draw on. Once you have the desired path as a spline put the axis of your pencil at the very tip and use the align to spline tag, and animate the pencil going along the path. Render with alpha and bring into your compositing app of choice, I used After Effects. In AE you could bring in the drawing (after you’ve stroked it in Illustrator, or rendered a bitmap or AE compatible file) and make sure that your rendered pencil and drawing line up. Make a mask on the drawing layer with the pen tool, and add a new point fairly often and roughly draw a path over the drawing (if you were able to copy and paste the path from Illustrator, as a mask to AE it would save time). Then add effect>generate>stroke to the drawing layer and set paint style to reveal original, and keyframe according to pencil position. This process can be lengthy but it is a nice effect, I just posted an early low-res render to youtube if it helps.
