  • Pen tool use in PP? Masks?

Posted by Danny Winn on February 14, 2009 at 4:29 pm

I have Premiere Pro 2.0 and I need to know if it is possible to draw around my actor with the pen tool to adjust the color and blur of my background only. Is this possible with the pen tool or any other way in Premiere Pro WITHOUT using After Effects?

The pen tool in PP 2.0 doesnt seem to work on the video image but only on the timeline.

I do have After Effects but I don’t want to do this there then have to save just these scenes as Avi’s because of the loss in quality. You can’t export AE files to PP 2.0 like you can with CS4.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I wish. That would be great, but the pen tool seems to be as useless as an appendix.

Does your mask need to be animated? If not, I have seen tutorials using the titler to make mattes that are perfect in your situation.

    For example check out: https://www.wrigleyvideo.com/videotutorial/tutdes_ppro2_smoothface.htm

    Thanks Chris,

I did watch that tutorial but he uses pre made shapes to create the matte and I need to draw around the head and shoulders of the actor (does not need to animate).

The title creation does have a pen tool that you can draw around the head and shoulder with but it just leaves a line where you draw, you can adjust the thickness of the line but unless I’m missing something it doesn’t create a matte or mask in the center of the lines you draw like the pen tool in After Effects does.

If I’m missing something please let me know. Thanks!

If you need no animated mask you can export one frame and draw the mask with the pen in Photoshop and import the mask again in Premiere.

    Good luck

You can fill the shape you draw in titler. Make sure the shape is selected first, then in the properties look for the FILL option and select a colour.

    Hmm?

I’m not sure what you mean Jon, right when you click your first point with the pen tool in the title, the fill automaticaly gets sellected. You can change the color and thickness of the line you just drew but there doesn’t appear to be any way to “fill” the center of the drawn shape like a paint bucket would do in photoshop for example.

Unless I’m missing a step in there.

In the Title Properties tab, under “Properties” -> “Graphic Type” choose “Filled Bezier” from the pop-down menu. Your shape will be filled.

Hey, that worked Jonathan! I was looking at every drop down in there for the word “fill” but just like you said it was “Filled Bezier”.

    Thanks much!
