    i don’t know of a way to draw custom mattes in FCP i think the pen tool has different uses in FCP. setting keyframes and such

    You mean in Final Cut Pro? There’s no such tool. There is in Motion.

    How about third party plug ins

    The closest thing is a 64 point garbage matte filter, but not a separate pen tool. Plugins can’t add tools. Motion is your best bet.

    That is one glaring weakness in FCP and as others have noted, Motion is your best best for creating a custom Matte. You can send your shot directly to Motion for the matte, and then send it back to FCP.

    Just throwing out the obvious: while Motion does do that, Shake is a much more robust toolset for that type of job. The caveat being that the learning curve is steep if you haven’t used a node based workflow before.

    The Slihouette plugin does a marvelous job with this. It does both mattes & paint.
