Hey guys, I need some help understanding what’s going on in Premiere with audio levels.

When I import an mp3 or wav music track to my timeline and play it unmodified with no other audio channels it will peak in the audio meters. How is this possible and why is it happening?

I probably have my thought behind this all wrong, but it was my understanding that music was mixed to 0db and that if it where mixed higher it would only end up getting clipped back to 0db when exported and so there is no way that music should ever go above 0db.

    What am I missing?

    Thanks!
    Dave

Not all tracks are mixed that way, also might be how whoever compressed it compressed it. Happens all the time when I’m editing music vids. lol.

CDs record at the highest level they can get away with whatever the genre, so as to get the best S/N

I usually find reducing the music import by 12db is a good start.
