  • PCI-Express gaf card – what and where to buy online?

I have a new dual-core PCI-Express 2.3ghz G5 coming next week and it includes the stock graphics card which is a NVIDIA Geforce 6600 I think. As I plan to work a lot in Motion I would like it to be fairly fast. i already have 4GB of ram on order and can upgrade the gfx card if necessary.

I cant seem to decipher which gfx cards will work in this new PCI-Express Mac. I assume that the NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT is a good one since that is the upgrade option Apple has on build to orders Macs. A Mac Store person told me he has a ATI Radeon X800 that will work in this Mac but I am not sure.

Can anyone suggest a good upgrade card in the $400 or less range, and a place to buy it from.

    Thanks for your help.

Over at barefeats.com they have some comparitive reports on the various PCIe cards using different applications. Well it seems that the performance hit on the 6600 vs 7800 is only 23%. For me that wasn’t enouh of a difference, at least for the kind of jobs I do. I am sure others have a different viewpoint.

x800 is an AGP card, not PCI-Express and won’t be compatible with the new machines. You should get the 256 VRAM 6600 model at the very least (and I do mean least), but I would recommend the 7800 if you are planning on using Motion extensively.

Nope, that’a an AGP card, won’t work in the new Dual Core machines. I do see some PCI Express cards on the ATI website, but none of them listed under Mac, so there are no drivers yet for Mac. But I’ve been told that a PCI Express ATI card is coming for the Mac. I’m waiting on that myself as we’ve added Final Touch HD to our shop and that only runs with ATI cards.
