PC Build (i7-8700K) for 4K/XR-Compositing
Hello there,
i am about to buy a new PC. At the moment I am running a i5-2500K, 32GB RAM; it is several years old.
In the near future I will do mostly UHD-Compositing (20+layers, 2D, no 3D), mostly AE, some Nuke, some grading with Resolve, some XR compositing/editing, some video encoding.
My budget is $2.500,-CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K, 6x 3.70GHz (no oc) – $390
Cooler: EKL Alpenföhn Ben Nevis – $30
RAM: 2× G.Skill RipJaws V schwarz DIMM Kit 32GB, DDR4-3200, CL16 = 64GB total – $830
Mainboard: MSI Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon – $200
Graphic Card: Palit GeForce GTX 1060 Dual, 6GB – $390 will connect 3× full hd TFT
PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 10-CM 600W ATX 2.4 – $100
SSD1: Samsung SSD 960 EVO 500GB, M.2 (project files) – $220
SSD2: Samsung SSD 860 PRO 256GB, SATA (os & programs) – €140
SSD3: used OCZ-VERTEX4 240GB (cache)
HDD: Western Digital WD Black 4TB 7200rpm (storage) – €210

Should I really already max out the RAM or wait for the prices to drop?
Do you have a recommendation regarding the mainboard? Everybody seems to be buying a Asus ROG Strix, but I don’t like the scarceness of USB3.0/3.1 connections.
I would really appreciate your opinions!

if you’re not overclocking why get a K
or a z mobo? save a couple hundred here.what can the 960 evo do that the 860 can’t?
0.02 sec less in audio pka creation maybe…600W psu for one gfx card, lol? there’s also much
cheaper name brand ones.4x 16gb G.skill $650 not $850

ram is retard expensive right now. you may not see much difference
unless heavy ram previews in AE. if you don’t like the preview length, add some more ram.there. now your bill is half, lol.

thanks for your reply! the prices for Germany seem to be more expensive than in the US…Actually I stuck to the building guide at pugetsystems:
https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems-for-Adobe-After-Effects-CC-144/Hardware-Recommendations…which led me to i7-8700k. (“The Core i7 8700K is currently our go-to recommendation, although the Core i7 8700 is only very slightly behind for a small savings in cost.”)
…and let me choose an M.2 drive for project files.
But thanks to your input, I changed to a 500W PSU. And I’ll try 32GB of RAM first.
Since I keep the i7-8700k, I am stuck with an Z370 board. Any recommendations?

Gigabyte H370M D3H $90 no overclocking support though. get a cheaper case too, but get more fans inside it as the SSD’s get really hot, yes they really do.
