    Hi,

I am trying to make a cut in a circle within Ai. An example in what i’m trying to achieve is shown in the attached image (Top image). I have created 2 small white rectangles that you can see in the top image and placed them over the circle and used the pathfinder subtract tool thinking this would achieve the desired effect but instead get the effect shown in the bottom image where everything is joined.

I want the cut to give a completely straight edge as shown and found this difficult with the scissor tool.

    can anyone please help?

    Thanks Scott

I’m guessing that the circle is a stroked path.

    First, I’d Object/Path/Outline Stroke, or Object/Expand.
    Then perform the Pathfinder operation.

Or, if you need to keep the stroke, you could apply a clipping mask.
