I’ve used a simple mask and multiple layers to simulate and object flying around another object (thank you Trish and Chris AE books!) and that’s easy enough…

But what if I need to do it with a lot of objects all from the same source that cross over each other? Say, a particle field?

For example, a planet with a particle ring around it but only at a slight angle… this would make the closer and farther edges of the ring cross over each other visually if the planet wasn’t in the way. There is a lot of tiny tiny objects in the cloud of the ring so trying to use a simple masking method isn’t working…

    Thanks for any tips!!

Yes it is a Particular layer so the trick you mention with the obscuration layer might work. I will peek at that tutorial as I use a lot of particleillusion to create other stuff so learning a better way is … well … better! lol

    Thanks Kevin!

hi brian, are your rings created using particular? if so, if it is just a single layer that you need to have the particles move around (like a planet layer), then you could try setting that layer as an obscuration layer in the visibility properties in particular may work (the obscuration layer does need to be a 3d layer)…

you might also check out this tutorial for a technique for splitting a particular particle system into separate layers to achieve a similar (somewhat better) effect.
