I’m in the process of setting up my Kona2 and new Huge 4105 Fibre Channel RAID. What kind of partitioning schemes are people using for their RAIDS? What works best and why?

    Basic System details:
    Dual 2.5 G5
    Kona2
    Huge 4105 Fibre Channel
Editing DVCAM, DVCPro HD, HDCAM, & SD
    1 FW800 250GB
    1 FW400 300GB

Add to the previous post that I’m editing short form promos and programs, nothing over 15 minutes and most projects last about 3 weeks.

Why do you want to partition? Just run it in raid 0 or raid 3, and use it as one big stripe.

I agree – this ain’t an AVID with Mediadabase issues. Make it one big mama partition, make sure to RAID it, and go to work.

The only reason I can foresee to partition is if you are using it for editing uncompressed 1080i HD. Then you might want to lop off the inner 20% to save on the disk slow down when the array is 80% full. Although, Huge can do this automatically for you in the High Definition Turbo Mode. I hate to sound cliche, but it’s all in the manual.

i would suggest running Raid3. I had a drive go down the other day, and boy was I lucky I was running Raid3. Huge sent over a new drive overnight, I installed the new drive and it rebuilt itself in about an hour. I kept right on working throughout the whole process. You’ll be glad you spent the money on a nice array.
