Particles on a Motion Path in Motion 4
Posted by Luke henry Vanden bosch on June 24, 2010 at 4:07 pmI’m trying to get some particles to follow a motion path.
I’ve been using an object moving along the path and then trying to get the particles to follow that object with the ‘Attract to’ behavior. This makes the particles follow the object but not along the path as I guess should be expected. So if I have a wave the object follows the wave but the particles cut the corners just to follow the object.
Any help would be great.

June 24, 2010 at 4:38 pmhow exactly do you want the particles to behave? The easiest method for particles to follow a particular path is to make their speed 0, and then animate the emitter along the path. Particles will be born along the path but not move off it. Since the emitter is moving, new particles are born at different points along the path.

June 24, 2010 at 4:42 pmWhen I have a path such as a Bezier line I like to use the Motion Path behavior. Make sure it is set to Geometry for the path shape and place the bezier line in the Shape Source well and the particle will follow the path.

June 24, 2010 at 5:01 pmI am looking at making the particles behave like a stream of water. So a randomized group of particles that loosely stick together and follow a path.
Does that help?

June 24, 2010 at 5:10 pmI’m not sure that a particle emitter is what you want. If you think of an emitter as a gun and the particle as the bullet, you’re limited to how you can affect the particle once it’s been emitted. You may have better luck with a replicator and the sequence replicate behavior.

June 25, 2010 at 2:33 pmTo be honest I have not looked at the Replicator before. I understand the concept and the differences now. Thank you. I am still having an issue getting anything to move on the motion path though. Or are you suggesting I don’t use a motion path?
Thanks.

June 25, 2010 at 3:04 pmThis is the look I am trying to recreate. This was created in After Effects. I am trying to get a similar look put together to use in templates within Final Cut Pro. I am also using this project to become more familiar with Motion.

Thanks again.

June 25, 2010 at 3:06 pmPretty easy to do in Motion. Use a replicator in 3D. Put the logo in a 2D group so it won’t be affected by the camera. Turn on depth of field. You could animate the replicated particles as a group, or I’d tend to animate the camera to get that result – maybe a little bit of both. But perfectly doable in Motion.
