    Hello everyone,

    I’m messing around with particles in after effects for a few weeks now, but I always have performance problems.
    Is there a way to let the particles “die” when they are out of the the screen?

    I use the standard build in particle system of After Effects 6.5 Pro and I can’t get my hands on anything else.

    No, it goes agianst the dynamic nature of those systems (even a particle that’s temporarily out of frame could re-enter it at some point.

    And there is no possibility to let them “die”, for example 5 seconds after the particle was emitted?

    There is a Lifespan parameter in particle Plagyround. It is found in the Persistent Property Mapper. What you need to do is to create a slightly larger than ‘final comp’ sized mapper that is full-on white and use that for the Lifespan parameter.

    ‘Final Comp’ is defined as the composition where you will be performing your final render. If it is NTSC D1, which is 720×486, and depending on the size of your particles, you will add 720+bufferArea+width of particle, to the width of the property mapper AND 486+bufferArea+height of particle, to the height of the property mapper. The bufferArea is a userdefineable area which should be perhaps 5-10 pixels in size – just for the sake of ensuring that the buffer works.

    This procedure will create a property mapper which can be applied to Lifespan which is larger than your ‘final comp’ size so that particles do not get clipped while they are at the edge of your comp.

    You can fade out the particles using the appropriate slider below the propery mapper parameter.

    Apologies – I hit the POST key too quickly. My last post provided for a recipe that works for setting the Lifespan for all particles – on or off-screen.

    To kill off particles that are off-screen, well … we’ve gone thorugh this a few times before. I suggest that you perform a search for “particles” and “kill OR Lifespan OR killing”.

    Again, we went through that a few times.

    Perhaps you are having issues with understanding how simulated particle generation works. I suggest that you look for this topic in the manual. I believe that my Particle Playland COW tutorial covered this paradigm sufficiently.

    you could use a black and white gradient solid as a luma matte to let them disappear but not to die!

    it’s still kind of slow but better then before
