Partial Span Confusion
Recorded a 1.5 hr. Program today with a HPX170 at 720p/60 on a 64gb card. I transferred the footage to an external HD like always and used my log and transfer in FCP 7.0 to begin editing. When I opened the footage in the log and transfer window I noticed that all the clips had a duration of 4 min. 55 sec and said partial span next to each clip. I do realize that my program recorded over onto my second 64gb P2 card but wasn’t expecting all the clips to be partial spanned? Is there a setting somewhere controlling the input duration?

Been shooting with P2 long? P2 has a file size limit of 4GB…therefore clips are broken up into 4GB chunks. Shoot anything long duration…then the files are split up, and “spanned,” meaning the clip spans several files. FCP will join them into one clip again, when you convert them.

When will they join together again? They are split up into 4:55 clips times 14 equaling the total duration of my program. I’ve shot long format programs before and never had this happen before.

When you Log and Transfer them. In the L&T interface they might look separate, but when you actually transfer them, then they’ll join up.

Yup. That’s the 4GB file size limitation of the cards.

On tapeless? Some formats allow for longer clips, others do not. P2 breaks up the footage, but joins them in the edit system.

They come into the bin as separate clips. 4:55 each.

Hmmm…trash your FCP preferences. It’s what you do when FCP isn’t acting as it should. digitalrebellion.com has PREFERENCE MANAGER, that does this with one button click, for free.

What’s weird is that the second camera that I shot the event with is doing the same thing as the first camera so I took your recommendation and downloaded the application. I started a new project and deleted the old footage from the HD and seeing if trashing the preferences makes a difference. I’ll let you all know what happens.
