  • Parenting Layers to a Shape Layer Vertex

I have a vector cowboy and he is composed of both shape layers and regular layers to allow for easy, fluid animation. I would like to know if there is a way to parent layers to vertices; for example, I would like to parent a shoe (regular layer) to the vertex in the center of the bottom of a pant leg shape layer, or a hand layer (regular layer) to the vertex at the center of the end of an arm sleeve shape layer. I know that this can be done with the puppet tool on a regular layer but the puppet tool causes too much distortion of the shape, which is why I would prefer to use shape layers. This seems like something that could be done through expressions, but I can’t seem to find a way to do it in real-time, i.e., without motion tracking. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As far as I’m aware, and not for lack of trying, it’s not possible. I remember reading that Adobe has said it was one of the most requested features for After Effects, so that’s good news in one regards – but probably not for your immediate needs. I’m sorry, I can’t find the link for the article though.

Thanks for your quick response! If anyone from Adobe reads this, can we have this feature, pretty-please? 🙂
