  • parent shadow causes problems

I have several “PIP’s” displayed on the screen at one time, each plays a video clip, and they rotate so that each has takes a turn in the front potition. They are all 3d source alpha tracks (for the z-axis rotation).

I want to add a shadow effect to give more dimension. The only way I’ve found to do this is to use a parent/child relationship, thereby using the parent track 2d shadow. The problem is, this messes up the entire layout. I’m not sure why, and I’m not sure how to fix it. Here are the before and after images to show what I’m getting:

Any ideas or help much appreciated.

Your problem is that you have thrown away the 3D information by adding a 2D shadow because you placed the parent track into 2D mode. You can’t do this. Both the Parent Track Motion and the Parent Composite Mode must remain in 3D mode for this to work (which eliminates using a 2D shadow) 🙁

BTW, Awesome use of 3D Track Motion and reflection. If you didn’t tell people you made this in Vegas, I’d bet that most of them would guess that was done in After Effects. Vegas is a powerful compositing application that not many people take advantage of… Bravo!

    Thanks John.

Guess I’ll have to fake it…possibly a solid box with some transparency and have it be a child of the PIP.

Valerie, I was wondering if you could send me a veg of what you are doing. I’ve been toying with a similar concept but haven’t got it quite right and would like to see how you have set up that project.

No problem John, I was able to get the shadow (faked in photoshop) done perfectly and I’m very pleased with the finished product. I will send you the veg once I get home, but you can watch the video here
