I want to position sfx in 3D space and effect the volume based on proximity to the camera using the camera position keyframes. Is this possible?

You can’t place the SFX as an audio file in space 2D or 3D – however you could place the SFX in its own Comp, then place that in the comp with a camera and use an expression to drive the volume based on proximity.

There are a few quirks in the way the camera calculates it Z position relative to a layer.

See this link for an explanation: https://motionscript.com/design-guide/auto-focus.html

While it discusses auto focus, it provides some copy/paste code that you can modify to suit your needs.

An oldie, but goodie: Filip Vandueren’s 7.1 mic setup test [link].
