I want to make a panning shot of a bunch of flat buildings. really simple in detail with some set closer then others in 3d space ending on a specific building. Is the best way to do this in Illustrator and bring it into AE for animating the camera from left to right? I was thinking of putting the different elements on layers. Will this be the best route? I want to make a long pan so do i just miliple 720 by how many “screen” i want to pan by? Any suggestions would be great.

Putting the stuff on layers certainly would be smart. For simple multiplication you shout consider effects such as Motion Tile so you don’t have a ton of separate clones in Illustrator. also do not forget about AE’s own Grid and Checkerboard effects which certainly can be used to build some of the facades. As for the animation – this is more or less just a simple matter of finding the right timing. Some oif the principles are illustrated in Andrew Kramer’s tutorial on building a DVD menu (the one with the oriental theme), so watch it.
