  • Panning a large time lapse video

    Hi all,

I have been asked to shoot a time lapse video of a building going from night to day. I have decided to use my 5D stills camera and an intervalometer (sp?)

They have dropped last minute they want the end of the shot to pan across to more sky than building. I dont have a robotic arm or slow moving pan head so I am trying to work out how I can do this.

This is my best guess but would appreciate your ideas

My still images are a lot bigger then 1080p which is the output format. After i have got quicktime to compile the thousands of stills at 25fps i normally output the whole frame to 1080p. Can i import larger than 1080p into FCP and pan the image across in post so it looks like i have panned the camera?

If i can, does anyone know how I would do this?

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

Yes. After Effects would be more appropriate though if you have that.

Under the Motion tab in the Viewer window. You have to keyframe the position of the video from one point to another – the manual covers this if you search for ‘keyframe’

    All the best,
    Alex

Great, thanks for that. i was racking my brains for a while!

I am very new to FCP and have only really played around with the core abilities of FCP and color. I will get to grips with motion for this project though. Thanks

    Thanks Dave,

As mentioned above I have a very basic working knowledge of the packaged applications. I have only recently moved from Sony vegas on the pc to FCP on the mac

Let me agree strongly with Dave on this.

I have done EXACTLY what you are trying to do. And, like you, I started out working in FCP/Motion. It was a very disappointed experience. I then took the project into After Effects (where I should have started) and the results were spectacular.

Want to put a big smile on your face? Forget about Final Cut for this job. Do it in After Effects and then bring it into FCP.

    Trust us on this.
