Wow, very cool. That’s one way for Light Iron to help spur industry adaption of their tech. I hope it works out for both Panavision and Light Iron.

It will be interesting to see if their customers are going to nudged toward FCPX to get the most out of Live Play as Cioni has stated…

It was at a Vegas premiere that I resolved to become an avid FCPX user.

Met him at NAB 2011 at his booth.
Super nice guy with a passion to help and teach users.
    Much deserving.

The real nightmare is when GE Capitol buys up Panavision, plus either ADOBE or AVID.

    That’s the day I retire.

Panavision and reasonably priced consumer software is not something I would lose any sleep over happening..

It might, but since the connection between Live Play and FCPX is only an XML I’d imagine editors using PPro (or FCP 7) could just import it natively and Avid editors could run it through an XML to AAF converter first.

There’s more than just FCPXML support (pic):

    [Andrew Kimery] “Eagle Eye Garchow”

I’ve been called worse, so, I’ll take it.

Panavision is primarily a rental operation these days. They own a range of digital cameras some of which they’ve “Panavised”. The money is in the lenses. LightIron does a nice business in renting location DIT gear (of which LivePlay is part). Part of that front-end service includes servers to host dailies.

Cioni has stated in a number of videos that LI rents a lot of Avid systems to production companies. Of course, they also have a number of Quantel DI suites. While Cioni has been a big advocate for X, the reality is that this combination forms a start-to-finish location and editorial rental service, with DI at the tail end. Specific NLEs are really a minor part of it and there’s no benefit to LI of “pushing X” unless that’s in service to client requests.

So, Panavision provides production/camera strength, which is complemented by LI’s DIT/post strength.
