    Hi,

I’m about to make a purchase – and it seems that Avid Xpress HD will NOT ingest Panasonic’s dvcpro hd. Is this correct? I was under the impression that it did handle dvcpro HD, but I’ve been told that Xpress HD will only EDIT dvcpro HD material, but can only ingest upto dvcpro 50.

If this is true, I will very reluctantly, but most certainly, sink my twenty grand into a Final Cut Pro HD system.

Please tell me I’m missing something and Avid Xpress HD will indeed handle both ingest and edit of DVCPRO HD material. I need this for a project workflow based on the Panasonic Varicam.

    Thanks,
    Nick

It does ingest DVCPRO 100 over FireWire the same way it does DV25 and DV50. You also output the same way. It handles both the 23.976p and 59.94p formats. You can also capture 59.94p in a 23.976p project to create a 2.5x slomo when played back.

It does not support variable frame rate (other than 59.94) at this time.

Xpress Pro HD supports the editing of DNxHD formats but cannot capture them, perhaps this is what caused the confusion.

    Michael…

thanks for clearing that up…that’s what I thought too….but it hasn’t been clear up unitl this point.

    Also…

can Xpress read the old avid formats: JFIF and AVBV media?

It can’t read ABVB media, but it can read JFIF for the supported resolutions:

15:1s and 1:1 (with Mojo) for interlace
    14:1, 28:1, and 35:1 for progressive

Thanks Michael. So Xpress HD does not handle the variable frame rate feature of the Varicam? That is the prime reason for us to go with the camera as opposed to the Sony CineAlta, so that’d be a huge hit against Xpress HD.

Is the missing piece in Xpress HD the Frame Rate Convertor (or FMC) software component that seems to be available on the Panasonic website for Final Cut Pro HD?

I’m wondering if this means that even with the new Panasonic HVX100 P2 Camcorder, Xpress HD will not be able to ingest variable frame rates.

Finally, if we are able to move up to Adrenaline HD, will these limitations disappear, or do they still persist?

    Thanks,
    Nick
