  • Panasonic SDX900 image on consumer HD tv

    1. Has anyone actually seen what the Panasonic SDX900 (16×9) looks like, broadcasted on a consumer HD tv?

    2. Will it have the so-called “3D Look” that some people associate today with HD or will the “non-broadcast”
person even be able to tell the difference?

    3. Even though the SDX900’s standard definition signal is in 16×9, does there have to be any upconversion to be seen correctly on an HD television?

I ask these questions because I am interested in purchasing the SDX900 with its new and lower price. I don’t have the clients nor the budget for HD. Not sure if I want to commit waiting a year or two to see if the Sony 1/2″ XDCAM HD takes off and I’m trying to get away from 1/3 chip cameras. I work in the free-lance world of still mostly Beta-SP and DV. Don’t want Beta-SP, looking for a camera with film-like characteristics. I know HD is here and is the future, but without the clients or the budget for HD, I’m wondering if the SDX900 will still get me by as more and more people are now buying HD televisions. Thank you.

I have heard (2nd hand) through Roger Macie (noted Boston tech and camera set up guy) that people are getting good results up rezing the SDX 900 to Hi-Def. I have a good friend with a 900, and he has done some preliminary testing using an AJA card. Their primary application is large corporate events where the final product would be projected HD. They also do a ton of After Effects work, and by uprezing they can create compositins in the HD format. I would say its a pretty good alternative to going full blown HD, although you still have to get it out to HD when your done. The camera is beautiful, and I wish they had dropped the price earlier as I would have got it over my DSR 450, which I bought for the 24p and film gamma settings… oh well

    OOPS!!!
I Mistakingly read that as the HDX 900 and am sorry for the error,

The SDX 900 has been out for a while and does look great in everyplace that I have seen it. It also upconverts to 16×9 HD better than many other cameras of its price and class.

No you won’t get a 3D look viewing any image on a SD monitor even HD originated footage unless of course you shot in 3D.

That so called effect only occurs when watching HD on a high res HD monitor.

If you want to see what SDX images look like on your consumer TV check out the following shows. Disclaimer so of the show are color corrected and others are not.

    MTV- Laguna Beach

MTV- Yo Moma (I think that’s the title it’s the show where contestants insult each other with “yo moma” like insults and slang.

NBC- Last Comic Standing (partial season some shows switched to 60i)

    TLC- Numerous reality shows
