April 17, 2005 at 10:09 pmJust got back from the Apple event – P2 + tape. Tape for DV only – DV, DV50 and DV100 on P2. Variable frame rate like Varicam in 720p. $5,995, but didn’t say what came with it in terms of memory P2 chips. 2 P2 slots. Works in FCP5.

Is the signal being sent out the FireWire port the same signal being written to the P2 cards, or does the camera have to keep the 60p/i compatability through firewire?
Basically I’m wondering, if we go straight to a hard drive through firewire while shooting 720P/24, are we recording the 40mb/s 24P file, or are we getting a 100mb/s 60P with a pulldown file?

April 18, 2005 at 3:09 amHey Luis,
I assume the signal comming out of the firewire port is the same one being sent to the P2 cards. Firewire is just a pipe for data, it doesnt need to conform to any specifications that a tape format would. You can send any kind of data you want down that pipe and theres no reason for them to transfer a pulldown to the hard disk recorder (unless ofcourse there was a manual option to turn this on- which wouldnt make much sense to me)

April 20, 2005 at 7:40 amLikely any streaming out the firewire port will be the full 100-megabit signal. That streaming would need to be compatible with existing streaming firewire capture devices, such as the AJ-1200HD deck, and FCP-HD and Avid Express HD.
Perhaps an external hard disk recorder would be designed with the “smarts” to drop the flagged frames, but that remains to be seen.
