    Hi ALL,

Just hours before shooting an independent feauture film (starting today at 6:00PM) we discovered that the DP was kind of lost with the Panasonic and its best settings to transfer to film.

I´ve been searching in the Cow and I´ve found a lot of information but some of them make me more confused in terms of: is it real 24p? is it 30fps but kinf od “fake” the 24 look? is it 60i? is it real 1080 x 1440? (the best we seem to be getting in 1280 x 1080 24pA) What do you think is the best option for shooting/capturing in FCS2, to transfer to film the final cut?.

The Directors choice is 1080 x 1440 24fps Progressive, but the camera seems not to be able to do that.

I´m assisting them in terms of “emergency mode” since they know I shoot and edit HDV, but I´ve never worked with this camera before.

Could someone, please, just suggest me what´s the best option for shooting/capturing/sequence settings in FCP with this camera?.

The original idea was to shoot at 1080 x 1440 24fps Progressive to Transfer to Film.

Thanks a lot in advance guys!

In 1080 mode, that camera records 1280×1080…that is the DVCPRO HD 1080 format. HDV, XDCAM, those are 1440×1080. AVCIntra is full raster 1920×1080. And if you shoot 1080i 24pA, that allows you to remove pulldown on import to get to 23.98fps. The other 1080i 24p setting is just 29.97 with a 24p “look.”

Set the camera up to shoot 1080i 24pA, make sure the frame rate is 24. Then when you import into FCP, in the Log and Transfer preferences, make sure that REMOVE PULLDOWN is checked to get the footage in at 23.98.

And always…ALWAYS…do test shoots well before you embark on an expensive film. Know how to use the camera and import the footage so you know what you are getting into.
