Panasonic HVX200
Posted by Christopher Joseph on April 18, 2007 at 5:18 pmHas anyone used Premiere Pro 2.0 to edit footage from the Panasonic HVX200? Can Premiere handle it? Any and all experience, problems, issues and advice is greatly appreciated.

April 19, 2007 at 1:48 amI edited HVX footage with PPro 2.0, using the Raylight plug-in.
Everything went smoothly . . . I was able to access the .mxf files(from 3 cameras recording to Firestores)directly without any type of conversion. The most important thing is to make sure that your project settings match the settings used on the camera. The only issue I ever had was that periodically I would get a message when trying to load a clip into the source window and it would say that the Raylight plug-in was not loaded. Closing and re-opening Premiere would take care of it . . . not sure what was causing it, though.

April 19, 2007 at 5:46 pmThanks for the help.
So in order to edit footage from the HVX200, I have to pay 200 bucks? Is there a free solution? -

April 19, 2007 at 9:05 pmNo free solution that I’m aware of. $200 is cheap, in my opinion, to be able to edit .mxf files directly!
Thanks . . . and I’ll check out the update. -

April 20, 2007 at 1:43 amI also noticed that there is the option to record in HD then downconvert from the P2 cards to a DV tape. Am I right in assuming that the quality of that footage would look better than if I recorded straight to DV tape with the same camera?
Also, can you record 480i 24p to the P2 cards? If so, what type of files are these and can I edit those in Premiere without the Raylight plug in?
Also, in 480i widescreen, is that the standard 480×720 or does it have the added 16×9 resolution of 480×960 (I apologize if my ratios are a bit off)?
Thanks for the help folks. -

No; what I’d suggest is shoot 1280 x 720/24P and you can edit this with Raylight as easily as editing DV. Then when it’s done you have the option of making an HD MPEG2 or HD WMV for viewing on various home HD systems or exporting conventional 24P DVD.

They’re MXF files and you’ll need Raylight

Thanks for the help folks.”I believe it’s 720 x 480 anamorphic just like a widescreen DVD.
