Shot my first test footage just as it comes out of the box. Rendered it in Vegas Pro 10 and burned it with Arch Pro 5.2. Over all I am pleased with it. Shot some footage in the family room with low light and it was a little grainy but I can live with that. The out doors footage was in dull winter sun and with the sun at my back. The rendered footage (BluRay format, BluRay disc, BluRay player) showed some wide verticle bands of light shading. It was only apparent from the top of the screen down (just on the light blue sky). This footage was of a light house in the distance with water in the forefront.

Question: Any idea what caused that?
Should I purchase a polarized filter?
Should I purchase just a UV filter?
Am I asking about the wrong type of filters?

    Thanks for any guidance.

[Bob Moyer] “Should I purchase just a UV filter?”

I’m not an expert camera guy but I NEVER shoot outdoors without a UV filter. It’s the first thing I buy for every new camera still or video. Even if it doesn’t solve your problem you should be using one anyway to minimize color changes from UV rays and to protect the front of your lens. I even leave it on indoors since it has no adverse affects.

A polarized filter will help cut the glare. It allows you to see through clear water like pools or car windshields. It’s another great filter to have in your kit. If the bands of light are from glare, a polarized filter will remove them.

    John,
Thank you for taking the time to answer. I, also, have a UV filter on my TRV30 camera, but it came in the box when I bought it. I am going to order one for the new camera as soon as I finish this post.

    Thanks again.

    John,

I got the UV filter and tried it out but I still have the original problem……

As a follow-up, I must add that the HD TV is a Sony Bravia XP9 x 52 inch. This whole issue has driven me nuts as the dark streaks show up on the FIOS connection (at first unnoticed) and also on the Blu-ray disc and Blu-ray player. The TV is exactly 3 years old. Upon further investigation, I have found that this is an issue with the Sony brand TV. Naturally, not everyone is experiencing this, but it is a known issue on the Sony e-support forums. Thank you for your advice and I just wanted everyone to know the outcome. I seriously doubt if Sony will do anything about this but I will send them the information.

Wow thanks for following up on this. I would definitely contact Sony and ask for a replacement, You have nothing to loose.

I had a Samsung monitor once that failed a month out of warranty and the support person on the phone said that there was nothing that could be done. Then I found a whole forum full of people with the same problem so I called back and immediately asked that I speak with a manager. When I got him on the phone I explained that everyone on the Internet was complaining about this problem and that it was obviously a manufacturing defect and that Samsung should replace these defective monitors and he agreed and sent me a new one.

It never hurts to ask… sometimes several times to several lines of management. 😉

    Good luck!

Thanks John. I contacted Sony and after a rather lengthy discussion about my TV problems, the agent said that I would have to deal with BestBuy (where I bought it). After some very gentle prodding/begging on my part the agent elevated it to the next level. To make a loooong story short, Sony is sending me a refurbished TV – the same as or comparable to what I have. I have no idea what to expect but that is the best they would do. I hope that all turns out well. After all, this TV is 3 years old but I would have expected it to last longer. I am dying to see the footage from my new camera. This is what started the whole saga.

Glad to hear that they did something for you. It pays to be persistent. 😉
