    Hi Barry,
Can you direct me to weight and dimension info on the HVX. All the info I have, white paper, PDF brochure, and relative doc’s do not specify any specs such as these.
I have made the assumption that the camera is a bit on the large size in comparison by looking at the brochure shots with hands and recognisable tripods in the same frame, not exactly technical I know but that’s all we have to work with here in Australia. Some of my colleagues jokingly refer to the HVX 200 at the moment as “Vapour-ware”.
It’s going to be good to eventually see one of the six engineering models doing the world tour appear down here. I simply couldn’t justify a $2500.00 (AUD) airfare to go and sample it at IBC.

[matthew Romanis] “Can you direct me to weight and dimension info on the HVX.

I don’t know the exact specs. It’s the same size as a Z1, and at ResFest Jan said the weight was within two ounces of a Sony FX1.

Real working models are being allowed for hands-on use on the ResFest tour around the US. So it’s not vaporware, there’s a working (although preliminary) model available for people to use. I think you probably wisely saved your $2500 AUD by not going to IBC, as that was an even-more-preliminary stage than the current ResFest tour is.

There’s supposed to be more footage released about six weeks from now.

[ShawnMitchL] “Can’t wait to have the HVX 200 appear and see how it performs. It certainly has whetted my appetite.”

our local VAR is supposed to getting some this month so we’re looking forward to testing it out, both by itself and side by side with the Varicam to compare image quality.

i did see a 80% working hand made HVX200 at resfest …however i did not see anybody using it .. i was able to pick it up for a few seconds but basically it sat there playing back clips on a 17″ LCD monitor … 1080i was the only mode that was working ( no 24/30p) .. after one sits thru panasonics talk on the defects of interlace and how much better progressive is over interlace they then project interlace images on the BIG screen .. note: Jan gives a excellent presentation on P2 and the HVX200 – i would have preferred to look at progressive images …

also at RESFEST canon had their new HD camera .. it was working and you could take it in your hands and walk anywhere in the room with it

[Jan Crittenden Livingston] “HD-SDI would only be useful if you had a RAID that would handle 1.2GBps of data.”

And because this kind of RAId would cost less than one 8GB p2 card, there would be great demand for that.
And that’s propably the reason why canon is offering hd-sdi-i/o.

Yep, there’s no hurry. 50 Hz version might be out in February…

[Jan Crittenden Livingston] “HD-SDI would only be useful if you had a RAID that would handle 1.2GBps of data.”

Actually, for a Final Cut Pro system with the AJA Kona 2, we can come HD-SDI out of the deck and into the system via DVCPro HD. This is very advantageous for folks who don’t want to the spend the extra money for the Firewire port on the 1200A. (why isn’t Firewire standard?)

So that negates the need for a very fast RAID since you’re just capturing / editing in the DVCPro HD codec and not 8 or 10bit 720. A FW800 drive will work just fine.

Of course if you ever plan to edit to the 1200A and you’ll need the Firewire port since the RS-422 doesn’t work during editing to the deck. You have to control the deck via Firewire during an Edit to Tape.

[ShawnMitchL] ” I am wondering what anyone might think/know about Panasonic’s commitment to P2 will be and when is a realistic time frame for 64GB media?”

Panasonic brochure says middle of 2007.

Mabe You could have spent AUS$220 for airfare to Sydney during SMPTE2005.
